Why Do I Have TMJ?

The hinge that allows your lower jaw to move is known as the temporomandibular joint. When the joint or surrounding ligaments have a problem, the pain of TMJ is the result.

TMJ can have various causes, but the most common two are misalignment of the teeth or jaw and clenching or grinding your teeth (known as bruxism). The latter is often connected to stress, although grinding can also occur at night and can be more difficult to detect.

What are the Effects of TMJ?

Stress or trauma to the joint, muscles, and tendons typically results in pain and soreness in the joint area. Other symptoms can include:

  • Pain and tenderness in the jaw
  • Aching in and around the ear
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Facial pain
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Locking of the jaw joint

It’s important to understand the difference between TMJ and tetanus, a serious bacterial infection that affects the jaw and neck. If you are not up-to-date on your tetanus shot and you experience a sudden onset of symptoms, contact your primary doctor quickly and schedule an appointment to test for tetanus.

Why Is Conservative Treatment Important?

There are multiple options for treating TMJ disorders, but many of them are rather invasive. These methods could include casting crowns on multiple teeth in order to create a better alignment, which involves removing natural enamel from the teeth to fit the crowns. Jaw surgery may also be a suggested treatment.

These treatments, while they may be effective, also include significant time, expense, and healing. The more invasive your treatment, the greater the potential for side effects and health complications.

Starting with conservative treatment means that the effect on your body as a whole is minimal, protecting more of your oral health at once. It’s also easier and less stressful on you as a patient. Dr. Adler prefers conservative treatment as a more positive and compassionate way to help patients find relief from their pain.
